Our First UK School of Herbal Medicine
Jane Wallwork runs the Exmoor School, which was established seven years ago. The Exmoor Plant Medicine School is based at The Exmoor Apothecary in Somerset on the edge of Exmoor.
Our Second UK School of Herbal Medicine
Fiona Fisher and Karen Davis run the Northern UK school, which was established this year to replace the Scotland School which was established in 2021. This Apprenticeship is currently hosted in Beechbrae Wood, Heights Rd, Blackridge, West Lothian, EH48 3SW, Scotland.
Our success in the UK is due to the demand for the unique type of tuition we offer, which adds an essential form of Herbal Lore to the overall education of Herbalists in the UK.
Herbal medicine has a long and rich tradition in the UK, and this knowledge was traditionally passed down through families and from teacher to apprentice. It was always viewed as the people's medicine, affordable and accessible.
Although certain historical events have affected this sharing, UK schools are proud to be part of rekindling this sharing of valuable knowledge, especially about the use of local herbs that have fallen out of use despite their amazing healing properties. We are actively engaged in adding to the body of knowledge about the role of local species in food and medicine and the importance this has in protecting biodiversity.
The UK also possesses a rich cultural diversity, and we are genuinely committed to acknowledging its role in the development of our skills and our materia medica.
The experiential and practical face-to-face learning we include in our courses enables people to become confident in making a wide range of medicines and growing and harvesting their own herbs. We believe that herbs are central to maintaining health and are the foundation of vitality for humans and the ecosystem. When herbalism is learned from a holistic perspective of how herbs work on all levels, the person becomes skilled in a holistic approach second to none, and we actively promote making this approach accessible to as many as possible.
