• We are the only school offering Community Herbalist training to this standard.

• Proficiency in speaking and reading English is the only prior learning skill required.

• This is a blended course so reasonable computer skills are required

• Unlike some other schools, we include herb growing, harvesting, medicine making, and nutrition in our comprehensive curriculum, so you don’t have to take additional courses to cover these topics

• In these times of rising prices our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to ensure that our course is affordable whilst maintaining excellent standards so that herbal medicine is widely available at a reasonable cost. 

• The whole course is 4-5 years, depending on your capacities.

• 2 years - Traditional Herbal and Botanical Medicine Apprenticeship course.

• 2-3 years - The Herbal Medicine Practitioner Training

You should allow for 15 to 20 hours per week for study and activities relative to the course, many of our students are working at the same time as doing this course.

• The course materials are derived from a multitude of sources, including years of experience from our teaching team (see team) headed by Nikki Darrel, author of several books.

• Respected textbooks, research papers, attendance at conferences and lectures, and conversations with luminaries of the herbal world

• A lot of time spent working with the plants and the natural world.

• The course is delivered in a blended format, combining online recorded lectures, live cohort meet-ups, a forum, face-to-face immersions, and mentoring.

• Whilst there is an element of self-directed study, there is a carefully designed structure to the course with assignments and activities to carry out month by month with the guidance of a mentor to help you through your studies.

• You get hard copies of the core texts, as well as soft copies available on the website to facilitate searching the texts

• You also get dried herb samples, samples of all the products made in class and live plant babies to work with at home

You get:

• One additional textbook for the 2nd year of the Apprenticeship

• Three additional textbooks, a stethoscope, a sphygmomanometer, and an otoscope for the clinical training.

• There is a suggested reading list; you can buy these books if you wish, but they are not compulsory.

• You have lifelong access to the materials.

• There are carefully laid out formative assignments throughout your training.

• Your mentor gives you feedback on these so that you can continue to evolve them

• We use a process of continuous assessment with feedback rather than exams.

• There is a final assessment with an external assessor in a similar format to a Master’s viva voce for the Practitioner Training

• You are assigned a mentor who is present at all your immersions and Zoom meet-ups, and gives you two 1-1 Zoom sessions a year.

• Your mentor provides feedback on your coursework and continuous assessment.

• Recognition and Professional Organisations

• The IRH accredits our practitioner course.

• The AMH does not accredit courses but recognises our training as excellent.

• Yes, upon satisfactory completion of the full course.

• In the UK and Ireland, as we operate under common law and herbalists are not subject to statutory regulation but rather voluntary self-regulation, there is no licensing of herbalists.

• This means that it is not obligatory for herbalists to join a professional organisation, although it does have benefits.

• Insurances - Also, it should be noted that significant numbers of practitioners choose to practice without joining a Professional Organisation but still obtain their practice insurance as individuals via Balens or another broker.
